I'm learning to blend

1 min read#race-wars#gamedev#blender

In my previous efforts at making Race Wars, I was using purchased 3D assets from the FAB Store. Since I am looking at moving to an opensource engine, it makes sense to me to learn how to make my own assets. Blender is free and powerful, but I have never used it for anything other than converting assets or checking textures.

Learning the basics

I have started a course on Udemy to build low poly cars, and have chosen a car that is special to me to start with, can you guess the car based on the bonnet?

It's an early start, but I am feeling confident I will be able to get a handle on this. It will open up a lot more potential for different cars, and remove any issues with licensing either from a purchasing perspective or a likeness perspective. I will be able to make cars that are styled LIKE real cars and not have to worry about the legal implications of making a car that looks too much like a real one.

Just cars?

And the other side is moving to an engine like Godot, landscape building is not quite what it is in Unreal Engine - but I am not seeing this as a problem, particularly if I can upskill at Blender and move level design outside of the engine. This will give me full control over aesthetics and I can look to make the world more thematically correct including all assets - not just the landscape but the buildings/props etc.

Will report back once I have gotten further through the build...
